Chijioke Ihunwo, a former staunch defender of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has clarified his decision to align with the Rainbow Coalition linked to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, insisting that his loyalty to Fubara remains intact.
Ihunwo, who previously accused Wike’s camp of destabilising Rivers State, said his move was in line with the governor’s directive to embrace peace.
“My principal is the Governor of Rivers State, and he has said there is peace in Rivers State and that we need to move on. If we truly support him, we should join him in the Rainbow Coalition,” he explained during an interview on TVC’s Beyond the Headlines.
He stressed that his allegiance was still with Fubara, noting: “We are supporting our governor because we want peace in our state. He is our leader and we are going to follow him wherever he goes.”
Responding to claims that he had betrayed his principles or offered poor advice during the political crisis, Ihunwo dismissed the allegations, saying he acted based on his convictions and his role as youth leader at the time.
“Frankly speaking, I do not regret anything. What I did, I was supposed to do at that time,” he said.Ihunwo rejected calls for him to apologise to Wike and other leaders, describing such demands as unnecessary.
He also denied sponsoring a parallel youth council structure or leading supporters to disrupt lawmakers loyal to Wike.On his current political alignment, Ihunwo said he would work with Wike’s supporters in Obio/Akpor ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that the governor’s instructions guided his actions.
“My leader has instructed us to work to ensure that the Rainbow Coalition succeeds in Rivers State. My loyalty lies with the governor, and I will follow his instructions,” he affirmed.
He concluded by noting that political alliances are never static: “In politics, anything can happen. The governor has said, ‘Let us sheathe our swords and move forward.’ That is what we are doing.”
