The Imo Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, has successfully performed its first robotic-assisted surgery, marking a breakthrough in advanced healthcare delivery in the state.
The procedure, carried out at the Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre, was led by Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, a UK-based consultant in robotic and laparoscopic surgery.
Announcing the milestone, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Electronic and Creative Media, described it as “a new chapter in healthcare delivery in Imo State,” noting that the centre brings cutting-edge medical technology closer to residents.
The facility, established under a public-private partnership, is part of Uzodimma’s vision to reduce medical tourism by providing specialised treatment locally.
Equipped with modern robotics and oncology services, the centre is expected to enhance cancer care, urological treatment, and complex surgeries, while also offering opportunities for specialist training and international collaborations.
Nwaogwugwu explained that robotic-assisted surgery allows for greater precision, smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, faster recovery, and improved outcomes.
He added that the centre was conceived to position Imo as a leading destination for healthcare innovation in Nigeria and Africa.
The development comes alongside the Imo State Health Insurance Programme, which enables residents to access healthcare services for ₦15,000 annually, aimed at reducing the financial burden of medical care.
Friday’s procedure marked the transition of the centre from infrastructure to full operation, with doctors and nurses expressing optimism during Governor Uzodimma’s inspection earlier in the week.
