Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, has been elected as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Idiaye, a third-term lawmaker, succeeded Blessing Agbebaku, who stepped down on Monday amid mounting pressure from colleagues seeking his impeachment.
His emergence was guided by the Assembly’s zoning arrangement, which stipulates that when the governor hails from Edo Central Senatorial District, the Speaker should come from Edo North.
As the most senior legislator from Edo North, Idiaye was unanimously chosen to lead.Without the zoning principle, the Deputy Speaker would have automatically taken over, Idiaye explained.
Following the leadership change, lawmakers visited Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House to formally notify him.
Agbebaku’s resignation came after 17 out of 24 members reportedly signed an impeachment notice on Sunday night.
His media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed the resignation, noting that further details would be released later.
