‘I Still Pay Royalties to my Brother for Taking his Name’ —Jay Jay Okocha

Nigerian football icon Augustine Azuka Okocha, better known worldwide as Jay-Jay Okocha, has shared the unusual story behind the nickname that defined his legendary career.

Speaking on the ObiOne Podcast, the former Super Eagles captain revealed that the name originated in his childhood neighborhood, where several boys were named Austin.

“When I travelled, people struggled to pronounce Augustine, so Jay-Jay was easier. I even put it in my passport. Till today, I still pay royalties to my brother,” Okocha said.

From the streets of Nigeria to the grand stages of Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers, and Fenerbahçe, the nickname became inseparable from his dazzling style of play.

Renowned for his creativity, dribbling flair, and showmanship, Okocha remains celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most gifted footballers.Long after retirement, the name “Jay-Jay” continues to echo across the football world, symbolizing artistry and joy on the pitch.
