A coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians, known as the G-100, has called on opposition parties to rally behind a single presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, warning that Nigeria’s democracy faces grave risks if the opposition remains fragmented.
In a seven-page open letter titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition”, dated August 2, 2026, the group appealed to leading figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, and others to set aside personal ambitions and negotiate a united front.
Signed by notable personalities including former APC National Vice Chairman (North-West) Salihu Lukman, ex-lawmaker Nnenna Ukeje, and Professor Anthony Kila, the letter stressed that Nigeria’s democratic survival depends on presenting voters with a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The coalition warned that the greatest threat to Nigeria is not only economic hardship but the weakening of democratic institutions through a divided opposition.
“Nigeria cannot be rescued by opposition leaders who march separately toward the same defeat. Personal ambition must submit to national necessity,” the letter stated.
The G-100 announced plans to convene a National Council of Opposition Leaders within two weeks, where Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Amaechi, Makinde, David Mark, and Rauf Aregbesola are expected to negotiate a consensus candidate.
The meeting will reaffirm the Ibadan Declaration of April 2026 as the foundation for building a united opposition strategy.
The coalition emphasized that democracy thrives only when governments can be peacefully challenged and replaced, urging opposition leaders to prioritize national interest over personal ambition.
