Pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme staged a protest on Monday at Lagos House in Ikeja, demanding the implementation of approved pension increases, wage awards, and the payment of outstanding arrears and other benefits.
The retirees gathered at the government premises to press for action on issues affecting their welfare and called on the Lagos State Government to settle the outstanding entitlements.
The demonstration was disrupted when police officers reportedly fired tear gas at the protesters, forcing some to disperse.
The use of force heightened tension at the scene, with the pensioners expressing strong dissatisfaction that force was used against them while they sought payment of their dues.
The group maintained that their demands focused solely on the implementation of pension-related increases, clearance of arrears, and other benefits owed to them.
Pensioners had set an August 31 deadline for the payment of their outstanding pension enhancement and wage award.More details to follow.
