The Benue State Police Command has recovered a newborn baby boy who was allegedly abducted from a healthcare facility in Gboko Local Government Area shortly after birth, and arrested several suspects in connection with the incident.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Peter Aondongu confirmed the recovery on Thursday.
He stated that the baby was found and that some of the suspects had been transferred to the state police headquarters in Makurdi, while others remained in custody at the Gboko Division.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at a Family Healthcare Centre in Gboko.
Sources said the baby initially failed to cry after delivery, prompting a nurse to intervene and stabilise him before the mother and child were moved to a ward.
An unidentified woman, reportedly posing as a nurse, later approached the mother, claimed she needed to examine the baby again, and took the infant.
The child’s grandmother briefly followed but was told to wait. The woman then disappeared with the newborn.
The disappearance caused tension at the facility, drawing family members and residents, and prompted the deployment of security personnel.
The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probe.
Police said the baby has been reunited with his mother, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances and any possible links to child trafficking.
