Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade have arrested three men suspected of arms trafficking and recovered an AK-103-2 rifle with ammunition in Zamfara State, while separately freeing six people from a terrorist attack the same day.
The arrests occurred around 2:05 p.m. on Sunday during a stop-and-search operation on the Kauran Namoda–Shinkafi Road, according to a statement released Monday by Capt. Yusuf Mohammed, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for 1 Brigade in Gusau.
The suspects were identified as Lukman Sulaiman, 20, and Nafiu Isa, 18, both said to be from Yar-Galadima in Dan-Sadau District, and their driver, 60-year-old Adamu Lawali. Soldiers found the rifle, one magazine, and 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition hidden inside a bag of millet in a Golf Wagon registered BMJ-143AA.
Preliminary findings indicated the group was allegedly transporting the weapon to Yar-Galadima in Maru Local Government Area. The two younger men reportedly claimed an Alhaji living in Gusau, whom they described as their father, had supplied money for the millet used as cover. They also alleged the firearm was meant for delivery to one Tijjani Goguwa of Yar-Galadima.
The Army said efforts continue to locate and arrest Goguwa, described as the alleged owner of the weapon. The suspects, firearm, ammunition, and vehicle have been taken into custody for further investigation and possible legal action.
In a separate incident the same afternoon, troops at Forward Operating Base Anka rescued six people after suspected terrorists attacked a vehicle at Gadan Manya along the Anka–Gummi Main Supply Route. Surveillance cameras detected the assault at about 2:30 p.m. Soldiers quickly responded and engaged the attackers as they tried to force the occupants into the bush. The intervention forced the assailants to abandon the six victims and flee.
The rescued individuals were taken to General Hospital Anka for medical care. Three sustained minor injuries and were reported in stable condition. Efforts were also underway to recover the vehicle.
The Army described both operations as part of ongoing efforts by 1 Brigade under the Joint Task Force North West’s Operation FANSAN YAMMA to disrupt terrorist logistics networks and protect civilians on major routes and in vulnerable communities.
Troops continue robust patrols and surveillance to maintain control of the area and deny terrorists freedom of movement.
