The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State have both criticized the suspension of Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze by the management of Abia State University (ABSU).
Nwaeze, a lecturer at ABSU, was suspended on Thursday after making social media posts comparing the earnings of commercial Keke riders to those of university professors.
He claimed that professors at ABSU earn less than ₦400,000 monthly, while their counterparts in other states take home about ₦1.4 million.
Reacting, the APC described the suspension as an assault on free speech and workers’ rights, accusing the Abia State Government of intolerance toward constructive criticism.
“The suspension of a university professor simply because he raised concerns about lecturers’ welfare and made comments deemed uncomplimentary to the Governor exposes the alarming level of intolerance of the Abia State Government,” APC spokesperson Uche Aguoru said.
The party demanded Nwaeze’s immediate reinstatement.Similarly, the PDP expressed solidarity with the embattled professor, alleging that his suspension stemmed from his advocacy for the rights of the university community.
In a statement signed by state chairman Abraham Amah, the PDP assured Nwaeze of support, urging him to remain steadfast and confident despite the development.
