Doris Ogala, the Nollywood actress, claims Alex Otti, Abia governor, introduced billboard campaign permit fees because he is scared of her.
In July, the state government announced that political
candidates seeking to campaign with billboards and posters in the state would
be required to pay fees to obtain a political campaign advertising permit.
Under the new rates, presidential candidates will pay N200
million, while governorship candidates will pay N150 million.
Senatorial candidates are expected to pay N100 million,
while candidates for the House of Representatives and state House of Assembly
will pay N50 million and N20 million, respectively.
Ogala is the African Action Congress (AAC) Abia governorship
candidate for the next year’s general election and will compete against
incumbent Otti, who is running for a second term with Labour Party (LP).
In an interview on The Clarity Zone podcast, Ogala said Otti
is threatened by her popularity and grassroots support, alleging that the
billboard campaign permit fees were introduced mainly because of her, as Otti
knows she cannot afford the fees.
“Which law says that? I dare him to pull down my billboard
if I put it up, and if he does, we will campaign without billboards. How much
did he pay during his own time?” she said.
“He is afraid of me, my popularity and the love the people
are showing me. That’s why he made that law. He knows APC and PDP candidates
can afford it, and I’m the only one who can’t, working with the poor, managing
my life and trying to rescue the state.
“They’re afraid of me. Alex is scared of me because he knows
I have the capacity; people love me, and I have grassroots support.”
She further tagged herself as the “strongest opposition” in
the governorship race, describing the PDP as divided and dismissing the APC
candidate as someone she is “smarter” than.
