Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has withdrawn comments he made against Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, during the recent Osun governorship election campaign.
In a statement issued Thursday, Olajengbesi acknowledged that his earlier remarks may have appeared disrespectful and emphasized the need to uphold respect for public institutions despite political disagreements.
“I personally withdraw my earlier remarks that may have appeared disrespectful to the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo,” he said.
The withdrawal followed exchanges during the election, after Okpebholo mocked Adeleke’s dancing at an APC rally, suggesting the governor “danced before signing documents, before breakfast and before drinking tea.”
Olajengbesi described Okpebholo’s conduct as “uncharitable” but stressed that the election was over and political disputes should not erode respect for elected offices.
He advised the Edo governor to rely more on his media aides and avoid what he termed “overzealous cheerleaders.”
He further noted that other APC leaders campaigned in Osun without resorting to personal attacks, adding:
“Political disagreements should never prevent us from respecting public institutions and the offices people occupy.”
Olajengbesi also urged Edo residents to hold their governor accountable, saying citizen scrutiny is vital in a democracy.
The development comes amid continued political exchanges following Adeleke’s re-election, and days after singer Davido rejected calls to apologise to Okpebholo over comments about the governor’s academic credentials.
