Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa, says the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost the August 15 governorship election in Osun no thanks to “Abuja politicians”.
The governor spoke on Tuesday during a press briefing in
Lafia, where he emphasised the importance of incumbency in any state.
On Saturday, Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, defeated
Bola Oyebamiji, the APC candidate; Najeem Salaam, the ADC flagbearer; and 13
other candidates in the keenly contested election.
The incumbent governor and candidate of Accord polled
511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Oyebamiji of the APC, who secured
444,815 votes, while Salaam of the ADC garnered 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won 19 LGAs, while Oyebamiji, the APC candidate, won
the remaining 11.
While the APC has rejected the outcome of the election,
Adeleke’s victory has continued to dominate national discourse, with President
Bola Tinubu sending in a congratulatory message immediately after the vote.
Speaking during the briefing, Sule said there was no way the
APC could have won the election with “Abuja politicians” descending on the
state days before the poll.
He, however, said the APC’s defeat in the election does not
diminish the achievements of the Tinubu administration.
“I’m not going to brag about anything that we are going to
do, but what I can tell you is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done well,”
Sule said.
“And then I see some people are actually happy and they are
celebrating that APC has lost. APC lost partly because of the Abuja
politicians.
“Because if not for some of these Abuja politicians, there
was no way for APC to lose in Osun.
“But what it means is that the power of a sitting governor
is not something you can joke around. That’s the message that was sent actually
in Osun.”
The governor maintained that many of those celebrating
Adeleke’s re-election do not know the actual factor behind the victory.
“For people who are celebrating, they don’t even understand
what the hell they are celebrating,” he said.
“What they are celebrating is that the power of a sitting
governor in Osun is what has stopped them from winning.”
