Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has called on Christians and Muslims to reject any same-faith presidential ticket in the 2027 elections, stressing that such an arrangement undermines Nigeria’s unity and democracy.
Okonkwo argued that the Nigerian Constitution opposes same-faith tickets, citing Sections 14(3), 42, and 15(2)(3)(d) of the 1999 Constitution.
His remarks followed comments by Islamic cleric Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, who reiterated support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim ticket.
“The same-faith ticket is a no-no for Nigeria of today,” Okonkwo wrote. “It is against the Constitution and promotes dominance by one religion. Muslims and Christians must be accommodated in the presidency as either President or Vice President.”
He emphasized that the presidency is a partnership that must cut across religious divides, urging Nigerians of all faiths to reject any attempt to sustain what he described as unconstitutional imbalance.
