The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as “illegal and worthless” the purported submission of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election by the Taminu Turaki-led faction.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, stated that only a legally recognised party leadership with authorised access to INEC’s candidate nomination portal could validly submit the names of candidates.
The Turaki faction on Friday claimed to have manually submitted Jonathan’s name as its presidential candidate, along with lists of governorship, National Assembly and state assembly candidates.
Its spokesman, Ini Ememobong, said the submission was made in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 despite INEC’s refusal to provide the faction with electronic access codes.
Mohammed insisted that the Turaki-led group lacked the legal standing to nominate candidates or transmit any list to the electoral umpire.
He called on Jonathan to distance himself from the faction over the purported submission of his name.
The development highlights the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, which has been divided into rival factions.
INEC has recognised the leadership backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
