The national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has issued a strong warning against individuals he described as terrorists masquerading as politicians.
In a post on his verified X handle late Tuesday, Dickson made the remarks after meeting with a joint delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), two US-based organizations that promote democracy worldwide.
The former Bayelsa State governor and current senator stressed that there must be consequences for such actors, calling for international collaboration to name, shame, and sanction them.
Dickson accused some politicians of abandoning genuine political mobilization in favor of violence, alleging that they procure arms, train thugs, and collude with security personnel to intimidate and kill during elections.
He lamented that this pattern has become routine during election seasons, with some perpetrators even rewarded with government positions.
“Terrorists masquerading as politicians must be treated as terrorists. There should be no mercy for them,” Dickson declared.
He reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and other institutions to guarantee citizens’ right to vote without fear or intimidation.
Dickson concluded by stressing that Nigeria’s democracy must be protected, and every citizen must have confidence that their vote truly counts.
