The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has declared Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, as its preferred candidate to lead a united opposition front against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
APM’s National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, made the announcement in Abuja, urging other aspirants to set aside personal ambitions and rally behind Makinde.
He described the governor as the politician with the strongest chance of defeating the incumbent, citing his performance in office and popularity among youths and professionals.
The endorsement comes ahead of a crucial meeting of the G-100 political pressure group, which is pushing for a single opposition candidate.
However, efforts to achieve consensus face hurdles, with Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress reportedly reluctant to drop their bids.
Yusuf emphasized that consultations among opposition parties were progressing, stressing the need for a formidable coalition.
He argued that Nigerians want “a leader with new and practical ideas, not theories and finger-pointing,” adding that Makinde has a clear blueprint to tackle security, economic, and infrastructure challenges.
He also noted that regional considerations could favor Makinde, as some political voices insist the South should produce Tinubu’s successor to complete another four-year tenure before power shifts back to the North.
Despite internal resistance, Yusuf appealed to all opposition stakeholders to prioritize unity over personal ambition: “What is important now is for all stakeholders to support Governor Makinde, who we insist is best positioned to defeat President Tinubu at the election.”
The search for a consensus candidate remains one of the defining issues ahead of 2027, with opposition figures and groups intensifying calls for a united platform against the ruling APC.
