Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has thrown down the gauntlet to President Bola Tinubu, insisting that his participation in presidential debates ahead of the 2027 elections will only happen if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) also takes part.
Atiku’s stance was conveyed in a statement by his spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, who argued that debates should serve as platforms for both ruling and opposition parties to present their policies to Nigerians.
He condemned the practice of hosting debates exclusively among opposition candidates, describing it as a tactic by the APC government to sow division while evading public scrutiny.
“The situation in Nigeria today, where presidential debates are organised among opposition parties only, is untenable,” the statement read.
“This has become a strategy that the failed, incompetent, and corrupt APC government under Tinubu has been using to instigate the opposition to attack each other while shielding itself from scrutiny.”
Atiku emphasized that he remains open to engaging Nigerians through interviews, town halls, and press conferences, but will not participate in debates that exclude the ruling party.
He challenged Tinubu to a national presidential debate, stressing that such a forum would allow Nigerians to compare policies and make informed choices in 2027.
