One hundred and sixty-three residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State who were abducted in a February 3 attack have been reunited with their families after more than two weeks of medical care in Ilorin.
The freed victims were escorted back to Kaiama on Thursday by the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, Abubakar Danladi; the Emir of Kaiama, Omar Shehu Muazu; and the Kiwazi of Wojibe, Ahmed Ibn Mohammad.
According to a statement by Mohammed Baniya, chief press secretary to the local government chairman, the homecoming was marked by emotional scenes as relatives who had waited anxiously welcomed their loved ones back to the community.
Danladi personally ensured the victims were safely conveyed from Ilorin following their period of treatment and recovery.
The chairman thanked President Bola Tinubu and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for their support in the efforts that secured the abductees’ freedom.
He also praised the unity and collective efforts of the people of Kaiama, describing them as the foundation of the successful outcome.
The 163 victims were among those taken during the attack on Woro community.
They regained their freedom through a coordinated security operation in the Kainji Lake National Park forest.
Community leaders had earlier noted that 13 others from the original group of about 176 abductees remained unaccounted for.
The return marks the end of a long ordeal for the survivors, many of them women and children, who had spent roughly six months in captivity before the rescue.
