The Presidency has sharply criticized Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing him of lacking a clear understanding of governance and offering no concrete plans for Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Engagement, Fredrick Nwabufo, made the remarks while responding to Obi’s recent interview in which he pledged to unite the country if elected in 2027.
In a statement, Nwabufo said Obi’s comments revealed a lack of deep thought and substantive policy ideas. “Peter Obi’s interview shows him again to be vacant of deep thought, understanding of governance, and taken up by syrupy rhetoric. He still has no plan, no alternative, and no policy plank, beyond a mouthful of sentimental nothings,” Nwabufo stated.
Nwabufo specifically faulted Obi’s claim of being able to unite Nigeria, noting that the opposition figure failed to provide any concrete mechanisms beyond superficial references, such as having northerners in his kitchen and as ADC. He argued that Obi’s actions and those of his supporters have instead widened divisions.
The presidential aide emphasized that true national unity stems from inclusive governance, economic integration, and equitable distribution of resources. He highlighted the Tinubu administration’s achievements in this regard, stating that all six geopolitical zones have benefited equally from government programmes, projects, and initiatives.
Nwabufo also pointed to the unprecedented appointment of young professionals from diverse backgrounds to key sectors as evidence of inclusive leadership.
The exchange underscores the growing political tension between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition figures like Peter Obi as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
