The Obidient Movement has criticised former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, over comments he made during a television interview, accusing him of dodging questions about President Bola Tinubu’s administration and instead diverting the discussion to the Nigerian Civil War.
In a statement released on Monday by its Media and Communications Directorate, the group said Sheriff failed to respond directly to a question on calls for Tinubu’s resignation amid worsening insecurity and economic hardship during his appearance on Channels Television.
The movement noted that rather than addressing the government’s performance, Sheriff referenced Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. It argued that Obi has consistently championed national unity and inclusive development, citing his support for businesses across regional and religious lines, including investments in northern Nigeria during his tenure as chairman of Fidelity Bank.
The group also highlighted Obi’s repeated proposals to boost agricultural productivity in northern Nigeria as part of efforts to diversify the economy and increase national revenue.
Responding to Sheriff’s comments on separatist movements, the Obidient Movement maintained that Obi supports a united Nigeria and believes grievances should be resolved through dialogue, justice, and the rule of law.
The statement further alleged that Sheriff had been “widely identified with the early rise and sponsorship of the Boko Haram insurgency,” insisting he lacked the moral authority to lecture Nigerians on patriotism.
“It is deeply ironic that Ali Modu Sheriff, a man widely identified with the early rise and sponsorship of the Boko Haram insurgency that devastated the North, now wants to lecture anyone on patriotism and national loyalty,” the group said.
It added that what truly unsettles Sheriff and others is the prospect of a Peter Obi administration dismantling what it described as the “lucrative insecurity industry” that has benefited political profiteers for years.
The movement accused defenders of the Tinubu administration of using ethnicity, religion, and historical events to distract from Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, and rising hunger. It stressed that Nigerians are more concerned with present realities than debates over historical conflicts.
