Nentawe Yilwatda, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has challenged opposition parties to go beyond criticising President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies to presenting practical alternatives.
Yilwatda made the call on Wednesday at the 10th National Assembly Award Dinner Ceremony, which was held at the House of Representatives
complex in Abuja.
The ruling party chairman, who was represented at the event
by Daniel Rejenieju, said many opposition leaders had also promised during the
2023 election campaigns to end the fuel subsidy regime while failing to outline
realistic measures to cushion the impact on Nigerians.
In a statement issued by Abimbola Tooki, his special adviser
on media and information strategy, the APC chairman described the removal of
fuel subsidy as an inevitable decision aimed at preventing fiscal collapse.
“The subsidy regime had become unsustainable, benefiting
only a privileged few while depriving the country of resources needed for
national development,” the statement reads.
Yilwatda urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Tinubu
administration’s economic reforms, expressing confidence that the current
hardship would give way to sustainable growth, fiscal stability and shared
prosperity.
He said the president has demonstrated political courage by
implementing reforms that previous administrations acknowledged were necessary
but failed to undertake.
“The present economic difficulties are temporary
consequences of reforms designed to correct long-standing structural
distortions in the economy,” he said.
Yilwatda cited the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as
one of the administration’s key interventions, saying it has expanded access to
higher education by providing financial support to millions of students
nationwide.
He also said the reforms have strengthened fiscal discipline
and increased allocations to states, enabling sub-national governments to pay
salaries, execute infrastructure projects and improve service delivery.
The APC chairman appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and
united in support of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
APC CHAIRMAN’S AIDES HONOURED
At the event, Jubrin Bancir, personal private secretary to
the APC national chairman, received the most outstanding personal private
secretary in Nigerian politics award.
Caroline Omeashem, secretary in the office of the APC
national chairman, was honoured with the most outstanding award in
confidentiality and professional service.
According to the organisers, the awards recognised their
professionalism, dedication and contributions to the effective administration
of the APC national chairman’s office.
Earlier, Uko Miracle, convener of the awards, commended the
Tinubu administration and APC leadership, saying his organisation had
documented the government’s achievements through engagements with ministries,
departments and agencies.
Fatima Abbas, who represented Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the
House of Representatives, also praised the organisers for recognising
excellence in public service.
