VIDEO: I Was in the Wrong Party Called PDP — Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that he was in the “wrong party” during his time in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that he found his true political home in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akpabio made the remarks on Friday while speaking at the inauguration of access roads to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in the Karsana District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), an event marking President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

Responding to comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who described him as an “uncommon performer” during his PDP days, Akpabio urged APC leaders not to take the remark seriously, noting that it referred to a period before the APC was formed.

“Please ignore the comment of the honourable minister that I was an uncommon performer in PDP. He is not talking about PDP of today,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President recounted that he had already served more than seven years as governor of Akwa Ibom State before the APC was founded in 2014.

He described himself as a “progressive-minded person” who naturally belonged in a progressive party.

“A progressive-minded person like me should belong to a progressive family. And therefore, when APC came to be, I discovered that that was my group, that I was in the wrong party called PDP. So I took my exit early and joined the progressives,” he explained.

Akpabio further noted that the PDP has since become fragmented. He jokingly recognised Wike as the “national leader of the winning faction” of the opposition party.

The comments come days after Akpabio took a swipe at the PDP during another event, where he expressed surprise that the party still existed and urged Wike to let it “die.”

The event also featured light-hearted exchanges between Akpabio and Wike, with the Senate President recounting Wike’s past visits to Akwa Ibom projects and praising his infrastructure delivery as Rivers State governor.
