President Bola Tinubu has called on United Nations member states to incorporate the Preamble of the UN Charter into their national constitutions, stressing that such a move would reinforce global peace, justice, human dignity, and international cooperation.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, conveyed the president’s proposal during an informal General Assembly meeting at UN Headquarters in New York on Monday, ahead of Tinubu’s participation in the 81st Session of the Assembly scheduled for September.
According to Ibrahim, Tinubu believes embedding the Charter’s Preamble would serve as a permanent reminder of nations’ collective responsibility to humanity and strengthen the shared values on which the UN was founded.
“The President’s proposal is designed to strengthen the collective resolve of all member states in advancing the ideals of the United Nations and ensuring that the values contained in the Charter remain central to national governance,” Ibrahim said in a statement.
The envoy noted that the initiative received applause from delegates, reflecting broad support for efforts to deepen multilateralism and global solidarity.
He added that Nigeria’s proposal underscores its commitment to peace, sustainable development, and inclusive international cooperation.
