Tinubu Unveils Training Programme for 5,000 Meter Installers

President Bola Tinubu has launched a major new initiative to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians as part of efforts to tackle the country’s persistent electricity metering gap, create jobs, and improve power supply reliability.

Announced via a statement on his verified X account on Thursday, July 2, 2026, the programme falls under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) and is branded The Power Force. It forms a key component of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda focused on youth employment and skills development.

According to President Tinubu, the scheme will provide participants with practical technical training and link them directly to opportunities in Nigeria’s power sector.“Through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), which I established to close Nigeria’s metering gap, end estimated billing, protect consumers and strengthen the electricity market, we are opening a new pathway for 5,000 young Nigerians to be trained as meter installers and technicians under The Power Force. This programme is about jobs, skills and dignity,” he stated.

Eligibility is open to Nigerians who have completed secondary education, with a special quota reserved for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. The President has directed the PMI to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria, and other stakeholders to begin the programme within the next 30 days.

Tinubu emphasised the broader benefits of widespread metering, noting that accurate billing promotes fairness for consumers, improves revenue collection for distribution companies, reduces losses, and supports infrastructure upgrades and service expansion.

“This is how we build a power sector that is fairer to consumers, stronger for investors and better able to deliver reliable electricity to the Nigerian people,” he added.

The President urged qualified young Nigerians to apply, describing the initiative as a chance to “learn a skill, earn with dignity,” contribute to ending estimated billing, and help “light up Nigeria.”

This move aligns with ongoing government efforts to reform the power sector, ban arbitrary meter installation charges, and expand access to reliable electricity across the country.
