President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a swipe at his political rival, Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of privatizing government assets during his time as Vice President while leaving pensioners unpaid.
The President made the remarks on Thursday while hosting Northeast stakeholders who paid him a courtesy visit to thank him for re-nominating Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate.
Tinubu said his administration is now clearing the pension backlog inherited from the privatization era under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, when Atiku served as Vice President.
“Nigerians are not asking for too much. Simple stability and social welfare,” Tinubu stated, pointing out the presence of pensioners among the visitors.
“I hope you’re receiving your pension. If I can go political, somebody among my prospective opponents privatized government investment in public entities but forgot to pay the pensions.”
He continued: “I’m clearing the pensioners now, so clearing the mess they created. But I won’t complain.”
Tinubu assured the gathering of his commitment to moving the country forward, saying, “We have our hands on the plough. We’re never going to look back. Through the twists and turns of this democracy, Nigeria will survive.” He pledged to harness unity in diversity to achieve democratic stability and national prosperity.
The statement marks the latest exchange in the ongoing political rivalry between Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar, a leading opposition figure.
