President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening and modernising the Nigerian Army as Nigeria faces intensifying security challenges.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Tinubu represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima said his government would deploy emerging technologies and enhance operational capabilities to improve combat readiness and national defence.
“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces,” he stated.
Tinubu highlighted ongoing investment in research and development within the Armed Forces, stressing the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) as central to boosting local defence manufacturing, creating jobs, and supporting counter-terrorism operations.
He also welcomed the African Land Forces Forum as a platform to strengthen regional security cooperation.
The President commended Nigerian troops for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and pledged continued support for families of personnel who lost their lives in service.
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara praised the Army’s strides in technology and manpower development, urging improved welfare for soldiers to enhance effectiveness.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, noted that over 80 percent of Nigerian soldiers are currently engaged in operations against insurgency and other threats.
He assured Nigerians of the Army’s readiness to confront jihadist infiltration from neighbouring countries, stressing its tradition of loyalty, courage, and sacrifice.
This year’s celebration, themed “Protecting the People and Serving the Nation: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army”, featured combat demonstrations, parades, and attendance by dignitaries including former leaders Olusegun Obasanjo and Yakubu Gowon, alongside African military chiefs.
