President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s stance against paying ransom or negotiating with bandits and terrorists, insisting that criminal groups will not dictate government policy.
Speaking during a meeting with Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Oyo State Council of Obas at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu revealed that some bandits had demanded the release of detained members of their gangs as part of ransom conditions for abducted Nigerians.
“We refused to negotiate for ransom. These criminals wanted us to release from detention members of their gangs already arrested, alongside the money they were seeking. I said no deal, we are not going to negotiate with criminals and we refuse to pay ransom,” Tinubu stated.
The president highlighted ongoing security reforms, noting that military divisions have been expanded from eight to twelve to improve response times against terrorism and banditry.
He also emphasized plans to establish state police forces with safeguards against abuse, alongside strengthening forest guards and intelligence gathering.
Tinubu urged traditional rulers to play active roles in supporting security efforts, stressing that community involvement is vital to defeating insurgency and restoring peace across Nigeria.
