Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has endorsed the position of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), that President Bola Tinubu has done his best in tackling insecurity.
Obi made the remarks during a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, which was uploaded on YouTube on Thursday.
He was responding to questions about his continued political ambition and why Nigerians should support him.
Reacting to Adeboye’s recent comments on the security situation, Obi said the revered cleric was correct in stating that the President had tried his best.
“Pastor Adeboye remains a very revered, respected religious father, whom I believe in his genuineness and goodness. And what he said was correct. He said he has tried his best. He’s trying his best. That’s it. It’s the correct answer,” Obi stated.
However, Obi questioned whether the President’s best efforts are sufficient for the country’s current challenges. “The question to ask is: Is his best good enough? Where we find ourselves today, that leads to the issue of capacity,” he added.
The former Anambra State governor stressed the importance of leadership qualities such as competence, capacity, compassion, commitment, and character. He suggested that President Tinubu appears tired and should “go home and rest.”
Adeboye had earlier defended Tinubu against accusations of inaction on insecurity. Speaking at a US-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala in Washington, D.C., on June 23, the cleric said the President had done his part by issuing directives to security chiefs and should not be expected to personally lead military operations.
Nevertheless, Adeboye expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation, which has spread across the country, and advised the President to set a 90-day ultimatum for military commanders to deliver results or resign. He also called for action against known sponsors of terrorism.
Obi’s comments come amid ongoing national discourse on leadership and governance ahead of future elections.
