United States Senator Ted Cruz has accused President Bola Tinubu of diverting resources and attention toward American lobbyists while Christian persecution continues in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Senator Cruz claimed that instead of addressing U.S. concerns over religious violence, Nigerian officials have focused on public relations campaigns against their critics.
The Texas Republican, who has been vocal on the issue, previously introduced the “Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act, 2025.” The proposed legislation seeks to impose sanctions on Nigerian government officials accused of facilitating the killing of Christians and enforcing blasphemy laws.
Cruz alleged that Nigerian authorities have created an environment enabling mass violence against Christians and religious minorities through the imposition of blasphemy and Sharia laws, while allegedly turning a blind eye to jihadist attacks.
“The US government knows the Nigerian officials responsible for these policies; I have been pushing my bill to sanction them, and President Trump has even ordered military action,” he stated.
The senator expressed satisfaction with President Donald Trump’s response to the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, accusing the Nigerian government of believing it can maintain the status quo through lobbying efforts rather than substantive reforms.
This latest criticism from Cruz adds to growing scrutiny of Nigeria’s handling of religious freedom and security issues in its relations with the United States.
