Two of the four suspects arrested by the Plateau state
police command in connection with the killing of Ibrahim Mabaye, a model and
student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), have narrated how they tortured him
to death.
The 25-year-old political science student was lynched around
the Ring road area of Jos north LGA on Sunday over an alleged theft of an
iPhone 12.
According to a statement by Alfred Alabo, the police
spokesperson in Plateau, the student was rescued by some colleagues, who rushed
him to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
However, the UNIJOS student was pronounced dead on arrival
by the doctor on duty.
The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many
Nigerians condemning the brutal torture meted out to the deceased.
Speaking on Tuesday while being paraded at the state police
command, the suspects said they tortured Mabaye with planks and canes after
tying him with ropes.
In a viral video which circulated on Wednesday, Emmanuel
Newyear, one of the suspects, said the owner of the phone was his cousin.
“On the 26 of this month, my cousin came to my place
informing that his phone was missing. He said they have called the deceased and
had come to the apartment,” Newyear said.
“When we interrogated him, he told us the phone was at the
Naraguta hostel beside a tree but we checked and we didn’t see it.
“He later told us that the phone was at Rayfield and we went
there but didn’t see it. We all returned to the hostel. People had already
gathered at the compound.”
Newyear said he first slapped the deceased inside the room
before bringing him outside for further punishment.
“I was the one that hit him with a plank three times. I beat
him because I want him to tell me where the phone is. I know him through my
cousin brother,” he said.
Teslor Joshua, another suspect, said he held the deceased’s
legs when they were tying him with rope.
“I only participated in holding his legs when they were
tying him. I didn’t join them in other actions,” he said.
Rinji Daniel, the owner of the phone, said the deceased
slept in his apartment on the night the incident happened but never saw him the
next morning.
“We came back from an event on that day and Ibee said he
would pass the night in my room. He later said he wanted to go outside to
answer a call,” Daniel said.
“He did not come back on time and my brother and I later
slept while my phone and my brother’s power bank were charging.
”I woke up around 4am and didn’t see the deceased. Only two
of us were on the bed. I expected three of us because he only told me he was
going to answer a call outside.”
Daniel said he searched everywhere for his phone and power
bank but couldn’t find them that morning.
“I checked for my phone and discovered it was not there and
the power bank was missing too. I checked outside and didn’t see him,” he said.
“I called his number and he was not picking. I tried my
phone but it was switched off. I used another person’s phone to call his
number, he then picked the call and cut it again. I then reported the case to
my cousin. That is where the whole thing started.”
