Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to stop what he described as misleading Nigerians regarding an alleged endorsement letter from U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Frank challenged the Presidency to immediately publish the full copy of the letter for public scrutiny. He argued that the document being celebrated by the government is merely a routine diplomatic communication acknowledging security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, not a political endorsement.
Frank emphasized that any authentic letter from President Trump should feature the official White House seal and the U.S. President’s signature. “The letter is not from the White House. If it doesn’t have the White House seal and the signature of the President of the United States, it appears dubious at best,” he said.
He further clarified that even if the letter is genuine, its content is limited to commending Nigeria’s partnership with the U.S. in tackling insecurity. According to Frank, it does not endorse President Tinubu’s leadership, economic policies, or administration, nor does it indicate U.S. backing for Tinubu in any future election.
“The Presidency is only trying to change the narrative by presenting it as something more than it is,” Frank stated. He also questioned the timing, noting that the letter was reportedly dated July 6 but only surfaced publicly weeks later. A genuine major endorsement, he argued, would have been released immediately.
Frank suggested the government’s heavy celebration of the letter reveals a search for international legitimacy. He contrasted this with past interactions, recalling that President Trump had hosted former President Muhammadu Buhari at the White House and invited him for direct engagements.
“If Tinubu believes President Trump is impressed with his administration, then he should visit Trump and stand side by side with him so the world can hear directly what he has achieved,” Frank said.
The Presidency had earlier announced, through spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, that President Trump wrote to Tinubu commending efforts to combat terrorism and the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
This latest criticism adds to ongoing debates about the letter’s authenticity and its intended political significance in Nigeria.
