Former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Mohammed Lukman, has announced his suspension of membership from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the opposition coalition.
In a letter to ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, Lukman said his decision was driven by persistent hostile treatment from former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and his associates over the coalition’s leadership in Kaduna.
“This may come to you as a disappointment. I am very sorry. I just can’t continue to bear the painful hostile treatment I keep getting from some leaders from Kaduna, especially Mallam Nasir,” Lukman wrote.
He alleged that decisions within the coalition were manipulated to sideline him, reducing him “to the status of a bastard” despite his efforts to reconcile opposition leaders in Kaduna.
Lukman said he had become the target of an orchestrated campaign by El-Rufai and his supporters.“For Mallam Nasir and his people, I am the problem. I have decided to resolve the problem for them and everyone,” he added.
The former APC chieftain explained that suspending his ADC and coalition memberships was preferable to “chasing dashed expectations.”
He also accused some coalition leaders of replicating undemocratic practices they once condemned, further eroding his confidence in the party’s future.
Lukman criticised former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, for engaging individuals in Kaduna whose commitment to building the ADC was questionable, while ignoring those who had invested in strengthening its structures.
He argued that these developments had reduced the ADC to “a marginal participant” in preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Despite his resignation, Lukman expressed gratitude to Senator Mark and other national leaders, clarifying that his decision was not a protest against the party’s national leadership but against the treatment he received from El-Rufai and some coalition figures in Kaduna.
