The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Professor Bello Abubakar, the personal physician to former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
MURIC made the call on Friday in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) arrested Prof. Abubakar on Wednesday over alleged false statements.
Describing the arrest as unjust and arbitrary, MURIC argued that the action violates global best practices and democratic principles.
The group stressed that medical personnel deserve respect worldwide and should not be compelled to breach professional ethics.
Akintola maintained that the doctor committed no offence warranting his arrest. He warned that detention could force the physician to compromise by revealing confidential information about his patient, contrary to the rules of the medical profession.
“We condemn this arrest. It is arbitrary, alien to global best practices and absolutely uncalled for. This arrest stands in contradistinction to democratic principles. We therefore demand the unconditional release of the doctor with immediate effect,” the statement read.
The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of El-Rufai and his associates by anti-graft agencies. MURIC’s intervention adds to growing calls for the physician’s release.
