The Presidency has emphasized that the responsibility of addressing poverty in Nigeria lies primarily with local governments, given their proximity to the people.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs (Office of the Vice President), Tofe Fasua, made this assertion during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Fasua explained that President Tinubu’s push for local government autonomy is rooted in the belief that grassroots governance is best positioned to deliver solutions to poverty.
“Fixing poverty is certainly a local government’s thing because local governments are the closest to the people,” Fasua said.
He noted that the administration has strengthened state funding and ensured timely payment of salaries and pensions, ending the era when civil servants and retirees were owed for months.
Recalling his experiences in Lagos in 1999, Fasua said local governments then played a vital role in supporting financially vulnerable citizens, with many seeking daily assistance from their chairmen.
According to him, restoring such functionality through autonomy and accountability will make local governments more effective in tackling poverty and improving livelihoods across Nigeria.
