A joint operation by the Zamfara State Police Command and military personnel has rescued a kidnapped staff member of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), repelled bandit attacks, and recovered hundreds of rustled cattle in coordinated missions across Gummi, Talata Mafara, and Gusau Local Government Areas.
According to intelligence sources, heavily armed bandits riding on about 50 motorcycles stormed villages in Ruwan Bore District, Talata Mafara, on July 7, rustling cattle and injuring a woman who was later treated at the General Hospital.
The attackers advanced toward Gummi LGA, where they abducted Aliyu Mohammed, an INEC staffer on official assignment with the National Examinations Council (NECO).
His official vehicle was later found abandoned, but examination scripts were recovered and secured by police.
Following reports that bandits had regrouped in Gando Forest with reinforcements from Sokoto and Kebbi States, the Police Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and military troops launched a joint offensive at 2:45 a.m. on July 8.
The superior firepower of the combined team forced the bandits to flee, leaving casualties behind. The kidnapped INEC official and another victim were rescued unharmed, while hundreds of cattle were returned to their owners.
In a related operation later that morning, security operatives responded to a distress call in Kwanar Ganuwa, Gusau LGA, where bandits had abducted motorists and farmers.
The VCRU and Police Mobile Force engaged the attackers, compelling them to abandon their captives, who were all rescued safely.
Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, CP A.M. Bello, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustaining offensive operations against banditry and urged residents to support security agencies with credible information to restore peace in the state.
