The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man who allegedly stormed a palace in Essien Udim Local Government Area armed with a locally made pistol.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John confirmed the arrest in a statement issued Saturday in Uyo.
She identified the suspect as Bassey Udo Idiong, who was apprehended on July 1, 2026, at about 9:00 p.m. following a distress call.
According to the statement, operatives acted swiftly on credible intelligence, mobilized to the scene, disarmed the suspect without incident, and recovered the firearm.
“The prompt response of the Police not only prevented what could have resulted in a tragic loss of life but also underscores the Command’s unwavering commitment to responding decisively to every credible security threat within the state,” the statement read.
John added that the suspect is in custody while a discreet investigation is underway to trace the source of the weapon, determine his motive, and identify possible accomplices.
She noted that the suspect will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare commended the officers for their professionalism and assured residents of the Command’s resolve to eliminate illegal firearms and violent crime.
He urged the public to support the police with timely, credible information, stressing that all reports would be treated with confidentiality.
Azare also warned criminal elements that there would be no hiding place for anyone attempting to disrupt peace and security in Akwa Ibom State.
