The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu directed officers to “shoot-at-sight.”
In a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer, Aniete Iniedu, the police clarified that the remarks made during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, were misrepresented.
The IGP, according to the statement, never issued such an order.Instead, Disu reminded officers that only authorized security personnel may carry firearms and stressed the dangers posed by illegal weapons fueling crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and cult violence.
The statement emphasized that the use of firearms is strictly governed by Force Order 237, which outlines when officers may lawfully discharge weapons while on duty.
The IGP urged officers to act within the law and respect human rights, reiterating that no directive was given to shoot individuals found with illegal arms.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting lives and rights of all Nigerians. Officers are expected to perform their duties responsibly and in line with the Constitution,” the statement read.
The Force also cautioned media outlets and the public against spreading misleading reports that could cause fear or erode trust in security institutions.
