Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has accused the President Bola Tinubu administration of granting undue access and legitimacy to Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-proclaimed Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described Adeyemi’s recent arrest as a diversionary tactic aimed at shifting blame toward the political opposition instead of addressing deeper official complicity in the scandal.
Atiku argued that the matter extends far beyond one individual’s alleged impersonation. He expressed astonishment at how the PFIPC reportedly secured diplomatic recognition, recruited over 300 personnel, and obtained office space within the Federal Secretariat under the watch of the current administration.
“The scandal is not merely that one man allegedly impersonated public authority. The greater scandal is that the Tinubu administration allegedly opened the doors of the Nigerian state to Adeyemi,” Atiku stated.
“This allowed him to acquire the appearance and privileges of official legitimacy and permitted him to interact with institutions and diplomatic interests in the name of the Federal Government,” he added.
The former Vice President also drew attention to what he termed broader irregularities in the 2026 national budget. He specifically questioned the allocation of N6.44 billion for a ‘Special Presidential Support Group for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers’, noting that Nigeria had already been eliminated from the competition by November 2025.
The PFIPC saga has dominated headlines in recent weeks, with Adeyemi facing allegations of forgery and impersonation. The Presidency has described him as an impostor, while the case has sparked calls for a thorough independent investigation into how such an operation allegedly functioned with apparent state backing.
