Parents of pupils at the Federal Government College (FGC) Staff School in Sokoto have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the salaries paid to teachers, describing them as grossly inadequate, especially for educators who have served for up to 20 years.
The concerns were raised during the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Annual General Meeting held on Sunday. Parents called for a minimum monthly salary of N100,000 and an additional N30,000 lesson allowance for teachers.
PTA Chairman, Jamilu Sidi, emphasized that better welfare packages for teachers would boost their morale, improve performance, and help maintain high standards of education in the school.
He warned that poor remuneration could lead to reduced productivity and negatively impact pupils’ academic outcomes.
Sidi also highlighted the need for greater transparency in the school’s financial management and more inclusive stakeholder engagement, particularly regarding decisions on school fees increments.
“Concerns over poor teachers’ welfare, limited transparency in the school’s finances and repeated increases in school fees remain unresolved despite engagements with the management.
Teachers’ salaries have only increased from N55,000 to N60,000,” he stated.
The PTA further appealed to the school management to repair damaged roads within the premises and work more closely with the association to create a better learning environment.
In response, Headteacher Chivuzor David thanked parents for their continued support and noted that the school had resolved its water issues with a new solar-powered borehole.
He, however, appealed to the PTA to assist with a solar power system for the nursery section to enhance teaching and learning.
Chairman of the School Board, Sulaiman Ibrahim, assured parents that all resolutions from the meeting would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for consideration and necessary action.
