Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State as evidence that the Federal Government is making progress in tackling insecurity nationwide.
Commending the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Department of State Services, Police, and other agencies for the coordinated operation, Sanwo-Olu said the successful release of the victims had restored hope not only to affected families but also to residents across the South-West and beyond.
“The rescue is a big relief and shows the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to the war against insecurity. I commend the tireless efforts and resilience of our gallant security operatives who made this possible. I equally rejoice with the people of Oyo State, particularly the residents of Ogbomoso, on this great news,” he stated.
The victims were abducted on May 15 when gunmen suspected to be members of Ansaru attacked three schools in Oriire council, killing a teacher, Michael Oyedokun, and later executing another in captivity.
The incident sparked weeks of protests and a month-long teachers’ strike in Oyo State.
Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the rescue on Friday, noting that it followed a joint military, police, and intelligence-driven operation.
He confirmed that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested by the DSS, while several others were killed.
He stressed that no ransom was paid and that a gang leader whose release had been demanded remained in custody.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State earlier described the rescue as a “big relief,” saying the government’s refusal to pay ransom had been vindicated.
Despite the breakthrough, more than 40 schoolchildren abducted in Borno State on the same day remain in captivity, underscoring the scale of Nigeria’s security challenges.
