Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has welcomed a proposed $145 million solar manufacturing plant in the state, describing it as a significant step toward industrialisation, job creation, and economic development.
The project, promoted by MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited in partnership with Chinese technical partners, is planned for Umuelele in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
Otti received the investors’ delegation, led by Dr Oko Jaja, at the Government House in Umuahia on Thursday. He expressed satisfaction that the investors had taken the final investment decision.
“I am glad that at least you have reached the final investment decision where you are investing up to $145 million. This is what we stand for creating an enabling environment for businesses to grow and for people to invest,” the governor said.
Otti assured the investors that the state government had provided the necessary land and remains ready to offer any further support needed for the project’s success.He emphasised that investments like this are valued not only for the capital inflow but for the accompanying benefits.
“It is not just the investment; it is what goes with the investment, the jobs that it will create, the GDP that would rise, and the prosperity that it will also generate,” he added.
Dr Oko Jaja briefed the governor on the project’s progress and commended the state for providing a conducive environment for investors. He disclosed that the first tranche of funding is expected in September 2026.
The Chief Executive Officer of MD Nwakanma Nigeria Limited, Mr Dennis Nwakanma, said the plant would be established through a Public-Private Partnership with the Abia State Government.
He expressed confidence that the factory would commence operations by the end of September, describing the project as a major milestone in renewable energy and industrial growth. The initiative is also expected to create jobs for youths through skills training and capacity building.
