The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Bola Oyebamiji, has called on the British High Commission and the broader international community to closely monitor the forthcoming August 15, 2026, governorship election in the state.
Oyebamiji made the appeal on Tuesday when a delegation from the British High Commission visited the APC Campaign Office in Osogbo. He argued that sustained international observation would help boost public confidence in the electoral process amid rising concerns over political violence and intimidation.
The APC candidate alleged that party members and supporters have faced politically motivated attacks since 2022, creating an atmosphere of fear ahead of the poll.
“The Campaign Council is deeply concerned about the escalating atmosphere of political violence, intimidation and thuggery targeted at members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress by individuals associated with the Osun State Government and Governor Ademola Adeleke,” he said.
Oyebamiji stated that the party has documented over 40 cases of alleged attacks on its members across various parts of the state. He cited specific incidents, including killings in Osogbo, Ota Efun, Ilesa, Irewole, and Otan Ayegbaju, as well as the alleged kidnapping and murder of an APC ward treasurer during the 2023 presidential campaign.
He noted that the party had reported these matters to the police and urged security agencies to conduct thorough, impartial investigations and prosecute offenders in line with the law.Appealing directly to the British High Commission and other international observers, Oyebamiji said sustained monitoring before, during, and after the election would help ensure a credible, peaceful, and transparent process.
“We respectfully appeal to the British High Commission and other members of the international community to continue paying close attention to developments in Osun State before, during and after the election,” he added.
The APC candidate reaffirmed his party’s commitment to democratic principles and peaceful conduct, stating that supporters have been instructed to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies. He expressed hope that the combined efforts of stakeholders, security forces, and observers would allow voters to exercise their rights without fear.
The visit comes a day after the same British delegation met with Governor Ademola Adeleke, who made separate allegations of political violence and called for sanctions against certain individuals. The Osun APC has since accused the governor of presenting misleading information to the delegation.
