Senator Adams Oshiomhole has thrown his weight behind a tough approach to crime, urging security operatives to shoot armed criminals on sight without hesitation.
The former Edo State governor and current Senator representing Edo North made the remarks during a Monday interview on TVC News.
He faulted the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for what he described as an apologetic stance on the issue.
“That’s why when this IG was saying he didn’t say ‘shoot at sight,’ Why is he apologetic? Shoot at sight. If you see a criminal, shoot on sight,” Oshiomhole declared.
The comments come after the Nigeria Police Force clarified that the IGP did not issue a blanket “shoot-on-sight” order.
Instead, Disu had referenced Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational guidelines for the use of firearms by officers, including established Rules of Engagement.
In the same interview, Oshiomhole commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for appealing a court judgment that sentenced certain convicted offenders to life imprisonment rather than the death penalty.
He stressed that judges should apply the law strictly rather than personal sentiments.
The senator identified insecurity as President Bola Tinubu’s biggest political risk ahead of the 2027 election.
He urged the President to set firm deadlines for service chiefs to tackle the problem and hold them accountable with clear benchmarks.
Oshiomhole noted that the administration has implemented necessary macroeconomic measures, recruited additional personnel into the armed forces, and created new army divisions as part of efforts to strengthen security architecture.
He maintained that while insecurity cannot be eradicated overnight, Nigerians expect to see consistent and deliberate action.
The outspoken lawmaker also defended the President’s visibility, dismissing criticisms and emphasising that democracy thrives on debate and contestation between the ruling party and the opposition.
