Okpebholo Commits N41m Aid for Edo Returnees from South Africa

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced a relief package worth N41 million to support indigenes evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks.

Speaking at the Festival Hall of Government House in Benin City on Monday, the governor assured the 41 returnees that each would receive N1 million within 24 hours to secure accommodation.

He further pledged soft loans to help them start businesses and reintegrate into society.

Okpebholo emphasized that the initiative was designed to help the returnees rebuild their lives after losing property during the violence.

“Your success begins today. Many of you possess knowledge and skills in different areas. Once you identify what you want to do, come to us. We will give you a soft loan to start with because we want you to fully reintegrate into society,” he said.

The governor reassured them of safety at home, stressing that Edo and Nigeria remain peaceful. He also reflected on Nigeria’s historical support for South Africa, noting that despite the attacks, Nigeria would not retaliate.

On behalf of the returnees, Riches Unubun expressed gratitude to both the Edo State and Federal Governments for facilitating their evacuation.

He urged fellow returnees to register for voter cards to sustain the progress in Edo.Director-General of the Edo State Migration Agency, Lucky Agazuma, commended the governor’s intervention, describing it as a lifeline for indigenes facing hardship abroad.
