A fresh dispute has erupted within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as Peter Obi’s ally, Morris Monye, and the party’s spokesperson, Theo Agada, traded accusations over the alleged substitution of Monye’s candidacy for the House of Representatives seat in Delta North.
Monye, in a series of weekend posts, claimed that political heavyweights who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) influenced his removal, insisting that a returning officer manipulated results to favour another aspirant.
He said he immediately briefed Obi, who advised him not to let the controversy distract from the party’s broader presidential ambition.
“I am not desperate to answer ‘Honourable’ but I’m desperate to see a Nigeria that works for me, you and all our loved ones,” Monye wrote, stressing his loyalty to Obi’s vision.
He further alleged that APC defectors were being favoured over longstanding members despite his financial and structural contributions to the party, including donating a constituency secretariat.
Responding, Agada denied any involvement by the national leadership, stating that candidate selection was determined at the state level.
He named Prof. Pat Utomi and Victor Ochei as local leaders responsible for decisions submitted to INEC.
“Morris knows the people responsible for his ordeal, but he would not want to call them out for fear of being cancelled,” Agada said, dismissing claims that financial influence dictated outcomes.
He argued that the party’s decision to sell only Expression of Interest forms, rather than both interest and nomination forms, proved it was not driven by moneybags.
The dispute escalated on Monday when Monye declared Agada unfit to serve as party spokesperson, describing his comments as “truly unfortunate.”
The controversy highlights growing tensions within the NDC as it prepares for the 2027 elections, with accusations of internal manipulation and loyalty battles threatening to overshadow its campaign strategy.
