Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed recent allegations made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo against him as a desperate attempt to rewrite history and give political advantage to Obasanjo’s preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the claims particularly the accusation that he bribed the late Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba to impeach Obasanjo as reckless and unfair to a deceased person who can no longer defend himself.
“Atiku said the former President’s decision to accuse him of bribing the late Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba was not only reckless but fundamentally unfair to a man who is no longer alive to defend his name,” the statement read.
He questioned why Obasanjo waited until after Na’Abba’s death to make the allegation: “If this allegation were true, why did he never make it while Rt. Hon. Na’Abba was alive? Why wait until the only man who could confirm or refute the claim has departed this world?”
Atiku argued that the allegations lack any judicial backing or official determination. He noted that if there was credible evidence of criminal conduct, action should have been taken at the time by a government with full state powers.
The former Vice President linked the timing of the claims to the approaching 2027 elections, suggesting they are designed to damage his reputation and boost Obasanjo’s “kinsman.”
He urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he called “stale allegations resurrected for political convenience.”
Atiku traced Obasanjo’s hostility toward him to his opposition to the former president’s third-term agenda.
He said he chose the path of constitutionalism and successfully challenged the move through the courts, actions now part of Nigeria’s democratic history.
While acknowledging Obasanjo’s right to support any candidate, Atiku advised him to do so openly rather than through untestable claims.
He called on leaders to focus on current national challenges, including economic hardship, rising insecurity, unemployment, hunger, and public resource management, instead of revisiting old political disputes.
“Our focus remains unwavering: offering credible alternatives, defending democracy, demanding accountability and working with all patriotic Nigerians to restore competent, transparent and people-centred leadership to our country,” Atiku stated.
The response comes amid ongoing political manoeuvring as Nigeria looks toward the 2027 general elections.
