The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has commenced registration for candidates seeking admission into Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes in colleges of education and non-technological agricultural national diploma (ND) programmes in polytechnics.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB
spokesperson, said applicants are not required to sit for the Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME).
According to him, interested candidates who possess the
required O’Level credits can register at any institutional professional
registration centre (IPRC) located in colleges of education or any JAMB
professional registration centre (PRC) nationwide.
Benjamin said the registration follows the federal
government’s decision to waive the UTME requirement for admission into NCE and
non-technological agricultural programmes.
He said JAMB has developed an admission process to ensure
that only qualified candidates are admitted, while maintaining and improving
the quality and standards of the programmes.
“Under this policy, eligible candidates only need to visit
any designated IPRC or JAMB PRC with their O’Level credentials to complete
their registration. There is no requirement to sit for the annual UTME,” the
statement reads.
“Candidates are therefore encouraged to take advantage of
this opportunity by promptly visiting the designated registration centres in
Colleges of Education or JAMB offices nationwide to complete their
registration.”
Benjamin said candidates who sat for the 2026 UTME but have
decided to pursue NCE or non-technological agricultural programmes can convert
their applications at any IPRC or JAMB PRC at no additional cost.
According to him, the policy is aimed at expanding access to
NCE and non-technological agricultural programmes while preserving and
enhancing the quality of the educational pathways.
BACKGROUND
In May, the federal government exempted candidates seeking
admission into colleges of education from writing the Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Speaking in Abuja at the admission policy meeting for the
2026 UTME, Tunji Alausa, minister of education, said candidates with four
credit passes in relevant subjects are allowed to apply to colleges of
education without sitting for the UTME.
He noted that such candidates must register with JAMB, while
their credentials are screened, verified and certified for the issuance of
admission letters through CAPS in accordance with extant regulations.
The minister added that the federal government has also
extended exemptions to candidates seeking admission into National Diploma
programmes in non-technology agricultural and agriculture-related courses.
He said the policy would take effect next year.
However, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) faulted the
policy, noting that if not properly implemented, it could weaken the quality of
teacher training and undermine professionalism in the teaching profession.
