‘My Mother Sold Akara, Father a Farmer’ – Umahi Defends First Lady, Remi Tinubu

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has defended First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s recent remarks urging Nigerian youths to embrace vocational skills, despite widespread criticism.

Speaking at a public event, Umahi revealed that his mother sold beans pudding (akara) and his father was a farmer, stressing that hard work and vocational trades should not be ridiculed.

Mrs. Tinubu had encouraged young Nigerians to consider roasting corn or selling akara as honest means of livelihood, a comment that sparked backlash on social media.

Umahi, however, insisted the First Lady’s advice was sincere:“My mother was selling akara. My father was a farmer. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that having used that to train me, I will continue to farm at their scale or sell akara at their scale. Why do we make joke of every genuine advice? Will everybody be a banker at the same time? So, let us be serious, for once.”

He added that every citizen must contribute meaningfully to national development, drawing comparisons with China where work ethic is central to progress.
