Mary Habila’s Death: Sowore Demands Coroner’s Inquest Before Burial

Presidential candidate of the Action Alliance (AAN) and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has demanded a full coroner’s inquest into the death of Mary Habila, insisting that her burial must not proceed until independent forensic investigations are completed.

In a statement posted on his official page on Tuesday, July 15, 2026, Sowore called for all legal and investigative procedures  including an autopsy where necessary  to be carried out before any burial takes place.

“There MUST be a coroner’s inquest into the death of Mary Habila at the residence of Tinubu’s Minister of Works, David Umahi,” Sowore declared.

He alleged that Habila died with blood flowing from her mouth, describing the circumstances as suggestive of an unnatural death.

Sowore further referenced previous unresolved cases allegedly linked to persons connected with the minister, including the disappearance or deaths of five NELAN engineers.

He urged authorities to ensure thorough public scrutiny of these incidents alongside Habila’s case.

Mary Habila, a physiotherapist on secondment to the Federal Ministry of Works from David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, was found dead under controversial circumstances at the minister’s residence in Ebonyi State.

The incident has sparked widespread public concern and allegations of foul play on social media.

Minister David Umahi has publicly rejected claims of wrongdoing, described the death as unfortunate, and repeatedly called for an autopsy to establish the facts.

He noted that the family initially declined the suggestion but has since reiterated his support for a post-mortem examination.

The minister has also indicated plans to pursue legal action against those spreading what he describes as false narratives.

Sowore’s demand adds to growing calls for transparency and independent investigation into the matter before Habila’s body is released for burial.
