Kwankwaso Rebuts Sheriff, Insists Obi Has Strong Northern Backing

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has dismissed claims by former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, that Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, lacks political support in Northern Nigeria.

In a statement released on July 7, 2026, Kwankwaso countered Sheriff’s remarks from a Channels Television interview, stressing that Obi secured about 2.8 million votes in the North during the last presidential election, a figure he described as “remarkable and undeniable.”

Kwankwaso argued that growing dissatisfaction with the All Progressives Congress-led government, combined with the inclusion of a Northern figure on the “OK” presidential ticket, has strengthened Obi’s appeal in the region.

He rejected Sheriff’s assertion that Kano voters would not support Obi, insisting that the Kwankwasiyya movement has consistently influenced electoral outcomes in the state.

"The people of Kano are neither bigoted nor xenophobic. They have always trusted the Kwankwasiyya movement and will support any credible ticket it endorses,” Kwankwaso stated.

He further advised Sheriff to focus on addressing Borno’s security and humanitarian challenges rather than making divisive political comments, adding that the “OK” ticket represents an opportunity to reset Nigeria and promote competence, unity, and progress.
